Knee

Muscles that surround the knee were once considered simply the motors that move the bones of this joint. Kinesiology has recently recognized that the muscles also provide stabilization to the joint, along with ligaments that limit range of motion.

Many problems result from muscles that provide improper support above and below the knee. If one or a group of these muscles becomes weak, the knee may lose partial stability. Many pelvic and low back problems are the result of instability in the knees. Frequently, problems with the feet are a common cause of knee pain.

By testing the individual muscles that support the knee, Dr. Widen can find the area of limited strength and work to improve its function. However, proper evaluation and testing of the knees is important to rule out possible cartilage and ligament problems. Sometimes people need surgery and are not candidates for this treatment.
